Asbestos is the only proven cause of mesothelioma in the United States. Asbestos has been known to cause mesothelioma since at least 1960.

Most people are exposed to asbestos in their occupation either in industrial settings, commercial settings or residential construction. Asbestos was also used in low tempature application. In many cases it was used as a binder or filler. It was used in drywall joint compound; spackling compound, oilfield drilling mud, electrical components, roofing materials and many others.

Asbestos can sometimes effect the family. It's rare but sometimes the wives or children of the worker can contract mesothelioma from the asbestos brought home on the clothes of their husband or father. Heard Robins tried a case against ExxonMobil in 2004 for the wife of a man who worked at the Exxon Refinery in Baytown Texas. She was unfortunatly diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2003. She was exposed from washing her husband clothes for some 30 years everyday when he came home from the plant.
