First Records of Mesothelioma
Believe it or not, the hazards of asbestos are recorded as far back as the time of Christ. A physician in Vienna in 1897 noted that asbestos weavers and their families were experiencing pulmonary problems and emaciation. It left no doubt that asbestos was the cause. In addition, before the 20th century it was noted that female inspectors in Great Britain investigated the manufacturing process of asbestos due to lung damage occurring in the workers.
A fatal case of asbestosis was reported by Dr. H. Montague Murray in 1906 to British Parliamentary for compensation. The patient worked in a textile plant that worked with asbestos. The man died at the young age of 33. Dr. Murray was able to attribute the death to damage to the lung tissue from the dust of asbestos. This is probably the first current day proven case of lung disease caused by asbestos.
The first published report appeared in medical literature by W.E. Cooke, a British pathologist, in 1924. The topic of the report was about Nellie Kershaw, a worker for Turner Brothers Asbestos Company. Nellie worked for Turner Bros. For 13 years until she was totally disabled at the age of 31. The asbestos exposure was responsible for her death. The disease that killed her was called Pulmonary Asbestosis.
By 1930, there was widespread knowledge that asbestos was hazardous.
From then on, information about the danger of asbestos was widely
available to industries.
