Causes of Mesothelioma
Most cases of mesothelioma are caused by a natural mineral, called asbestos, which is mined from rock. This mineral is made up of tiny fibers that can be woven like cotton, but are stong as steel. They are also highly resistant to chemicals and heat.
Asbestos is used in household appliances, construction and ship-building. If asbestos is damaged or disturbed it releases tiny fibers that when inhaled into the lungs can cause inflammation and a build-up of scar tissue along with cancer.
The first link between asbestos and mesothelioma was in the 1960. Now it is well know to be the most common cause of mesothelioma.
Insulation materials used to contained asbestos. Because the fibers were so fine, if they were inhaled, they would make their way into the smallest airways of the lung. They were then unable to be coughed out. The asbestos fibers could also penetrate beyond the lung to the lining around the lung called the pleura, which over many years would cause the development of mesothelioma.
People most likely to have been exposed to asbestos and at risk for mesothelioma include:
- Construction workers including plumbers and electrians
- Boilermakers,
- Demoltion workers,
- Shipbuilders
- People who worked in offices with asbestos present
- People who lived near asbsestos factories
- Family members of any of the above, where the person may have brought the fibers home on their clothing
The disease mesothelioma usually takes between 10-60 years to develop following exposure to asbestos. This is why it is difficult to determine the exact cause of mesothelioma.
There are cases of mesothelioma where there has never been exposure to asbestos, but in some cases, mesothelioma has been linked to radiation exposure.
