Mesothelioma Surgery Options

In some cases, surgery can be an option for mesothelioma patients. This can help alleviate symptoms or slow the progression of mesothelioma throughout the body. Surgery may be performed in conjunction with other treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy.

Palliative Surgery
Palliative surgery is performed to treat the symptoms of the disease as opposed to the diseases itself. Since mesothelioma is a fatal disease, palliative surgery allows the patient to live out their remaining days in relative comfort.

For example, one of the more common symptoms of mesothelioma is pleural effusion, a buildup of fluid inside the pleural space. This symptom can be remedied by draining the fluid, however, it is common for the symptom to return. The only option could be by closing the pleural space through surgical means, that procedure is called pleurodesis.

Curative Surgery
A curative surgery is usually performed on patients with early stages of mesothelioma. Curative surgery involves taking a proactive approach by removal of mesothelioma tumors. Although the intent is to eliminate the disease, curative surgeries have been unable to eradicate the mesothelioma disease.
