New Treatment Methods
The following is a list of new treatments for malignant mesothelioma that are presently being tested.
Angiogenesis and Anti-angiogenesis Drugs
Tumors need blood cells in
order to grow and they are capable of creating new blood vessels for that purpose. This
therapy uses drugs to halt tumors from forming new blood vessels, therefore ceasing tumor growth.
The drugs can zero in on the actual tumor while not causing damage to the healthy cells in the vicinity.
Immunotherapy
Also known as biological therapy, this approach uses your
immune system’s ability to differentiate between healthy and sick cells and to rid the body
of the cancerous cells. Immunotherapy’s goal is to boost the immune system’s own cancer-fighting powers.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
Single-celled organisms, when introduced to certain
photosensitive drugs, can be destroyed upon exposure to light at a specific frequency. With
PDT, these intravenously given drugs concentrate in the diseased cells which are then exposed to a
laser light delivered to the cancer site through a fiberoptic device.
Gene Therapy
The goal of this approach is to reach and remedy the disease at the DNA level.
Replacement gene therapy exchanges a mutated or missing gene with a normal copy of a gene that keeps cells from growing.
Knockout gene therapy is directed at the products of oncogenes (genes responsible for tumor growth) in the hopes of putting them out of the growth business.
Complementary and Alternative Medicine
In the past, this large variety of health philosophies was not usually accepted by traditional Western medicine. But it is becoming more accepted and even recommended. These include: acupuncture, herbs, homeopathy, massage therapy and Eastern medicine. These are sometimes used in place of conventional medicine and sometimes used as a complement to them.
To learn more about these new treatments, please speak to a medical professional.
