Pleural Mesothelioma
Pleural mesothelioma arises in the pleura, which is the lining that surrounds the lung. About 80% of mesothelioma's are pleural mesotheliomas. The most common symptom is a build up of fluid around the lungs. The lungs naturally create fluid that is absorbed thought the lung. The tumor prevents the reabsorption of the fluid which caused the build up. The build up of fluid in turn causes shortness of breath. Fatigue, muscle pain and other flu like symptoms are the first symptoms of mesothelioma to appear.
Almost all mesothelioma tumors start in the pleura, or the lining of the lungs. Therefore mesothelioma cancer that begins in the lining of the lungs is called pleural mesothelioma.
Exposure to asbestos fibers is the only known cause of pleural mesothelioma. The asbestos fibers are inhaled into the lungs and are stuck there. It is believed the fibers then move through the lung to the pleura in a number of ways.
It generally takes about 20 years from exposure to asbestos to the development of mesothelioma. Occasionally it will take 40, 50 or even 60 years before the disease appears. This is the reason the disease is found in seniors. It is unusual to find symptoms in younger people.
A diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma is not good. Malignant mesothelioma generally claims the life of the victim in about 2 years. However, medical advancements in recent years have eased the progress of the disease.
If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma or have lost a family member due to malignant mesothelioma contact a mesothelioma attorney at the Dallas and Houston mesothelioma law firm of Mesothelioma Trial Lawyers.
